Chairman of Constitutional Council (CC) and former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said at the CC meeting today that he had no intention of reconvening the Parliament to create another crisis and urged all parties to not create any form of constitutional crisis at this pandemic situation, a statement from the Parliament said.
Former Speaker Jayasuriya also pointed out that since the Supreme Court is the only institution that can interpret the Constitution in a Constitutional crisis, he would abide by its ruling.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa informed the Constitutional Council that steps are being taken to look into the problems of Sri Lankan labourers in the Middle East in the face of the Coronavirus (COVID19) and steps are being taken to resolve their problems.
Considering the letter sent by the election Commission, the CC decided to submit to the attention of the Police Commission that it should work with the concurrence of the Election Commission with regards to transfers and appointments of police officers during the election period.
The CC also reviewed the progress reports submitted by the Independent Commissions that were setupped after the passage of the 19th Amendment.
