Gemunu Karunarathna, a physically handicapped soldier of the 6th Gajaba Regiment of the Army, yesterday (Dec 03) undertook a challenge to travel a distance of 580 kilometers on a wheelchair to mark the International Day of Disabled Persons.
Mr. Karunaratne had lost both his legs in on May 07, 2009 following an attack by the LTTE.
In commemoration of this year’s World Disabled Day, he set off from Devinuwara and expects to reach Peduruthudawa within a span of eight days.
Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake had lauded the effort by saying this is the first instance in which a physically handicapped soldier has undertaken a challenge of this magnitude.
