Governor Salley's intervention sought over financial dispute on garbage disposal

News

Western Governor Azath Salley has been requested to intervene and resolve a financial dispute between the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) and the Colombo District (Low-Lying Areas) Reclamation and Development Board.

According to a press release issued by the Governor's office, a dispute had erupted between both entitites regarding the payment for the disposal of garbage collected from Colombo.

Three CMC councillors - Rusiripala Tennakoon, Sharmila Gonewala, and Pradeep Jayawardene had called on the Governor and voiced their concerns on what they claimed was a high charge levied by the Reclamation and Development Board for the dumping of waste.

Mr. Tennakoon had pointed out that the Board had charged Rs 526 million from May 2017 - July 2018, from the CMC, in addition to Rs 207 million as extra dumping charges.

“We feel there is an excess of payment of Rs 150 to 200 million in the deal, which has to be investigated by a third party to resolve this issue,” the councillor was quoted as saying in the press release.

During the discussion with the Governor, Mr. Tennakoon also urged the removal of Municipal Commissioner A. K. Anura against whom charges have been levelled through the 2017 Presidential Commission report and the Auditor General's report in 2018.

He insisted that these reports must be tabled before the CMC meeting as it highlights several lapses of the CMC with reference to certain officials and their functions.
