The Government yesterday said that it will take every possible attempt through diplomatic channels to ensure the release of a Sri Lankan female domestic worker who was recently sentenced to be stoned to death after being found guilty for having an affair.
According to Foreign Employment Minister Thalatha Athukorala quoted by local media, the Government has already filed an appeal before the Riyadh Court in Saudi Arabia, on behalf of the Sri Lankan female domestic worker, who was recently sentenced to be stoned to death. Athukorala added that the entire expenditure to ensure her release would be borne by the government.
Ministry sources quoted by government media said the woman was married and having children in Sri Lanka, when she was convicted for adultery with a Sri Lankan youth employed in Saudi Arabia.
