Govt. to take over land leased for VOA station

The Government will take over a land in the Iranawila area in Puttalam that has been leased to the US Embassy in 1991. The land, covering 166.038 hectares, was leased to the embassy to establish a Voice Of America (VOA) transmission station in Sri Lanka.

According to the Government, the US Embassy has informed the Government that it wished to hand over the said land and assets in that land to the Sri Lankan Government before the expiration of the lease agreement. 

Accordingly, a proposal made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs, to take over the said land and assets by terminating the agreement, was approved by Cabinet.
