The hearing of the FR petitions that were filed challenging the President's gazette to dissolve Parliament was taken up before the Supreme Court today (Dec 04).
The arguments of around 10 President's counsel's representing the petitioners were heard before a 7-member judge bench comprising Chief Justice Nalin Perera, Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, Sisira de Aubrew, Priyantha Jayawardena, Prasanna Jayawardena, Vijith Mallagoda, and Murdu Fernando.
President's counsel Suren Fernando, while forwarding his submission had argued that how individuals like the President and his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa could take a contrary stance although they were of the firm view that the Parliament could not be dissolved before four and a half years, as reported through media.
Also forwarding a submission on behalf of the petitioners, Presidents Counsel K Kanag-Isvaran had said that the constitution was like a garland of pearls and therefore needed to be considered as a whole.
Court proceedings concluded at around 5:30 pm and will be continue tomorrow (Dec 05)
