Former national cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya who was banned from all forms of cricket today (Feb 26) has said that he had accepted the charges against him for the "love of the sport of cricket, for the greater good and to protect the integrity of the sport of cricket".
Issuing a special statement to his fans, the former cricketer explained that the ban was a result of his alleged failure to cooperate with the investigations by not providing his sim card and mobile phone "immediately" to Anti-Corrpution unit officials of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
He also insisted that the failure to cooperate with the investigations were for "very personal" reasons.
"It is clear that there were no corruption charges, betting charges or misuse of inside information charges levelled against me under the code" Mr. Jayasuriya said in his statement.
The former cricketer also claimed that an in-depth investigation before an anti-corruption tribunal would have determined whether the charges levelled against him were justifiable.
