The fundamental rights petition filed by police chief Pujith Jayasundara against the decision to send him on compulsory leave has been postponed until June 24.
Additional Solicitor General Indika Demuni de Silva appearing for the Attorney General (AG) sought another date to hear the petition since the prosecution required time to consider the petition.
However, attorney Viran Corea appearing for Mr. Jayasundara had urged that the petition must be heard at the earliest since the rights of his client is being violated daily since being sent on compulsory leave.
During today's hearing, Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, Prasanna Jayawardana, and L.T.B. Dehideniya informed the prosecution to serve notice to the defendants in the case.
Acting IGP C.D. Wickremaratne, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, and the members of the Constitutional Council are among the respondents to the petition.
President Maithripala Sirisena had sent IGP Jayasuriya, the petitioner on compulsory leave, over the failure to prevent the Easter Sunday bombings.
However, IGP Jayasundara in his petition claimed that he was not allowed to attend National Security Council meetings since October last year. Accordingly, he argued that the President's decision to send him on compulsory leave was a violation of fundamental rights.
