Though curfew in the Vavuniya district was lifted at 5.00am today (28), Vavuniya town remained closed.
Vavuniya District Secretary Saman Bandulasena stated that a decision was taken at a meeting held yesterday to close down all shops and businesses in Vavuniya town and to disinfect the entire town.
The decision to disinfect the town came after the Vavuniya Traders' Association urged authorities disinfect the town area as it had come to light that a navy soldier in the district who had tested positive for COVID-19 had traveled to many places in Vavuniya town including government offices. The traders' association told authorities that they would close down all their shops in town today to aid the disinfection process.
Accordingly, the Vavuniya Urban Council, PHI Office and police worked together to disinfect all areas frequented by the general public in Vavuniya town today.
