Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that the Independence Day serves as a reminder to the people that they were one society under one flag.
In his Independence Day message, Mr. Rajapaksa had said that the diversity that exists within the Sri Lankan society was the uniting factor of the people.
He added that although he has been overjoyed by watching the country's growth, he has also been sympathetic to witness the country unite in the darkest times and at the same time, tear itself up from within.
Further, he said that Sri Lanka has always had to juggle its diversity and had often been at the receiving end of the battle that produced freedom fighters who created a literal interpretation of the country's flag and displayed it through their own diversity.
