Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in his Independence Day message has said that independence would be realised only when people achieve coexistence in all aspects.
"Celebrating 'Independence' does not necessarily mean that it has been achieved to the true sense of the word" he said.
Mr. Wickremesinghe added that this day is the ideal opportunity to encourage public dialogue to acheive 'national independence' that is broad-based and is rid of ethnic differences.
"The Yahapalanaya government has overcome countless challenges and obstacles to establish a refreshingly, new social and political culture, while taking significant steps to strengthen democracy" the Prime Minister emphasised in his message.
On the same lines he added that these collective efforts have led to the creation of a society which can fight against anti-democratic and extremist forces.
