Indictments have been handed over to two suspects involved in the Welikada prison riots at the Special High Court today (Jul 18).
Police Inspector Neomal Rangajeewa and former Prisons Superintendent Emil Ranjan Lamahewa were handed over indictments before they were released on a cash bail worth Rs 100,000 each and two surety bails each worth Rs 5 million.
The suspects were accused of involvement in the riots at the Welikada Prison which had resulted in the death of 27 inmates on November 9, 2012. The Attorney General had filed indictments against the accused on July 4.
Meanwhile, prisons officer Indika Sampath, who is also a suspect in the case, had not appeared before the court to receive indictments today.
