Veteran writer Jean Arasanayagam has been hailed as a voice for the voiceless victims of the ethnic tensions which erupted in the 80s.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe issuing a condolence message over the demise of Ms. Arasanayagam, said the celebrated poet was one of the rare personalities who carried forth their literary works to the global arena.
He noted that it is rare to find English literary writers in Sri Lanka, and those that ventured onto the international stage was an even rare feat.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said that the manner in which the writer achieved greater heights in terms of humanity, was of more value than the plethora of awards she had clinched during her career.
Accordingly, the Prime Minister along with his wife Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, expressed their condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, and friends of the poet over her demise.
Ms. Arasanayagam passed away at the age of 87 after a brief illness at her residence in Kandy this week.
