The Kandy Municipal Council took urgent steps to remove some ‘flawed’ national flags - without colour stripes that represent minorities - which were put up around the city area ahead of the Cabinet swearing in ceremony at the Magul Maduwa (Audience Hall) of the historic Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic today.
Commissioner of Kandy Municipal Council Chandana Thennakon confirmed to the Times Online that earlier a couple of those ‘lion only’ flags were put up by the municipality staff but they were removed later. He refused to elaborate on why those flags were hoisted around the city.
The national flag, is consist of a lion, holding a sword facing two small strips, which were added to represent the Tamil and Muslim communities. In 1972, the government added four leaves of the Bo tree to the flag. Under the regulations, it is an illegal and punishable offence to showcase flawed national flags.
