A container was returned to Sri Lanka after the customs found that the container was carrying 8 metric tuns of Kothala Himbutu chips (Salacia reticulata )to Japan ,Customs Media Spokesman Mr Lesle Gamini said. He said that they found Kothala Himbutu Chips valued over 4.2 million packed as in a 20 foot container which reported carrying Cinnamon chips. Mr Gamni explained that three residents of Colombo 11 who shipped the container have been questioned by Customs Department. He said that the plant is protected under the Fauna and Flora Act in addition to that Possession, or illegal smuggling out of county is strictly prohibited. “Though the plant can not be exported the it has a demand in foreign countries for medicine due to it’s anti- diabetic properties,he said.
