A 82 year old life sentenced inmate of Mahar prison reportedly died due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) upon admission to the Ragama hospital, Department of Prisons said today.
According to the department, the PCR test conducted during the postmortem examination revealed that the inmate who had other underlying health issues contracted the virus.
The victim was a cancer patient and was receiving treatment at the Welikada prison hospital. Over 400 prison inmates have been tested positive for the coronavirus over the past few weeks and this would be the first death reported from the COVID-19 cluster inside the prisons.
