LTTE items unearthed at Vavuniya school

A stock of military items suspected to have belonged to the LTTE have been unearthed during construction work carried out at the Vipulananda College in Vavuniya. Police said the items were discovered last afternoon.

Workers who were using earthmoving equipment while engaged in construction work on a new building at the school had initially discovered a blue colored barrel about four feet tall. Police who were called to the site had discovered a belt containing a pistol holder along with ammunition pouches inside the barrel.

The Special Task Force (STF) which examined the location after classes at the school had ended for the day, then discovered nine 9 volt batteries, four circuits used for suicide jackets, six wires and two pistol magazines inside the barrel.

It is believed that the items, used by LTTE suicide bombers and members of its 'pistol group' in Vavuniya, had been hidden at the site during the war.

Further investigations by Vavuniya police are ongoing.
