Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa flew to Japan early this morning for a private visit. He is visiting the country on the invitation of a group of Sri Lankans in Japan. Several MPs from the Joint Opposition, including Wimal Weerawansa, Prasanna Ranatunga, Lohan Ratwatte, Rohitha Abeygunawardena and Roshan Ranasinghe also flew to Japan as part of Mr. Rajapaksa's entourage.
The former President reached Japan this afternoon where he was warmly received by Sri Lankan residents in Japan, Polonnaruwa district MP Roshan Ranasinghe said.
He added that Mr. Rajapaksa was due to meet monks of several Buddhist temples in Japan and to address a gathering of Sri Lankan expatriates. He is also hoping to meet former Japanese special envoy to Sri Lanka Yasushi Akashi and other Japanese parliamentarians.
