The Maldives has requested the Sri Lankan government to lift the restrictions imposed on obtaining resident visas to Sri Lanka.
The request was conveyed by Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid who called on Minister of Internal and Home Affairs Vajira Abeywardena today (May 10).
Sri Lanka had tightened its regulations for providing resident visas as a security measure in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday terror attacks which created concerns over the country's security.
According to Maldivian media reports, around 15,000 Maldivians are currently residing in Sri Lanka. However, the tightening of visa rules will not affect those who are already residing in the country, Miuvan Mohamed, Communications Director at the Maldivian foreign ministry said.
