The mandate of the Presidential Commission on Missing Persons has been extended by three months following a directive from the Presidential Secretariat, the Information Department said today. The duration of the commission’s term in office ended yesterday.
Currently the Presidential Commission is preparing to hold its next public sittings in three regions in Jaffna from February 27 to March 1, a senior official of the commission said.
The mandate of the Presidential Commission on Missing Person was extended by one year by President Sirisena last year, soon after he assumed office. So far the commission has received around 18,800 complaints of missing and 5500 of them are testified before the commission.
However Chairman Paranagama said though the preparations for the next sittings are under way, if the government did not extend its mandate, there would be no public sittings.
