Military personnel in Rathupaswala shooting granted bail

The Gampaha Magistrate's Court has granted bail to Brigadier and Sergeant accused of involvement in the Rathupaswala shooting in 2013. 

Brigadier Anura Deshapriya Gunawardena and Sergeant Lalith Gray had been in remand custody after they were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the incident. 

The Gampaha Chief Magistrate set a cash bail of Rs.100, 000 and two sureties of Rs.3 million each for the Brigadier while the Sergeant was set a cash bail of Rs.50, 000 and two sureties of Rs.2 million each. 

Brigadier Gunawardena was the commanding officer of the army contingeant which fired on a group of protestors in Rathupaswala on August 1, 2013. The shooting left three people dead and dozens of others, including several journalists, injured.
