The Ministry of Defence has declared a month long amnesty for those in procession of unlicensed firearms to hand them over.
The unauthorized firearms can be handed over between 9.00 a. m. of 25.04.2016 to 4.00 p. m. of 06.05.2016, to every District Secretariat, Divisional Secretariat and every Police Station.
President Maithripala Sirisena in a gazette notification issued b this week also directed that the persons handing over the firearm should not be fined or punished for an offence committed under the Firearms Ordinance with regard to keeping in custody, possession or utilization of the firearm before the date of hand over.
