A total of 3816 suspects have been arrested for violating the lawa during an island-wide police operation carried out under the directives of IGP Pujith Jayasundara.
Out of the arrested individuals, 1033 were apprehended for drunk driving offences while 950 were individuals on whom arrest warrrants have been issued, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.
He added that the police operation had taken place from 11 pm yesterday (Feb 08) until 03 am today.
Former Speaker and NPP MP Asoka Ranwala was arrested today following a road accident in the Denimulla area of Sapugaskanda last night, police said.
