Sri Lankan Naval Ship 'Gemunu' in Ragama has been declared as a detention centre for those arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
The declaration was made via a gazette notification issued by President Maithripala Sirisena on May 24. Accordingly, suspects who have been arrested under Section 9 (1) of the PTA could be detained onboard the Naval Ship.
According to Section 9 (1) of the PTA, these suspects may be detained upto a period of three months. This detention period may be extended without exceeding three months at a time.
