Newly appointed Navy Commander assumes duties

Newly appointed Navy Commander Vice Admiral Travis Sinniah, WWV, RWP, RSP and 2 Bar, USP, ctf-ndu, psc, MSc (D&SS), Dip in IR, MUSNI assumed duties yesterday, Navy said. In a symbolic gesture of handing over command, the outgoing Commander Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne presented the new Navy Commander the Admiral's Sword at the ceremony held at the Naval Headquarters in Colombo today, states Navy media. The new Commander of the Navy was also accorded a guard of honour during the occasion.

Mrs. Thiruni Sinniah, Area Commanders, Vice Chancellor of the KDU, Director General of the Coast Guard, Flag Officer Commanding the Naval Fleet, Director Generals of the Navy and senior naval officers were also present at the ceremony.

Vice Admiral Travis Sinniah was educated at Trinity College, Kandy and St. Joseph's College, Trincomalee. Upon joining the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee as a cadet officer in 1982, he graduated in 1984. He later received a scholarship to the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, UK and graduated from there in 1986.

Prior to taking over command of the Navy, Vice Admiral Sinniah was the Commander of the Eastern Naval Area. He is married to Mrs. Thiruni Sinniah and has a son Taarun (24) and a daughter Enakshi (21).
