TNA parliamentarian Mavai Senathirajah said yesterday (Jan 06) that the TNA will not take legal action against the appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Opposition Leader.
Addressing a press briefing in Jaffna, he said that the TNA has informed Speaker Karu Jaysuriya that it would not file a case against the appointment of the former President as Opposition Leader in replacement of TNA leader R. Sampanthan who was holding the position until the new appointment was made.
"The TNA does not have any objection on the appointment of any parliamentarian including Mahinda Rajapaksa as Opposition Leader" MP Senathirajah explained.
However, he said that the TNA will not support any action carried out in violation of parliamentary tradtions or the constitution.
He also pointed out that objections towards the new appointment have surfaced since Mr. Rajapaksa has been appointed as an Opposition Leader from the SLFP despite obtaining membership of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
