Noel Ranasinghe, pioneer of Sri Lankan calypso passes away [caption id="attachment_77516" align="alignright" width="208"] Noel Ranasinghe[/caption] Noel Brian Ranasinghe, the Sri Lankan singer/songwriter who created a new style of singing with trademark sarongs, straw hats, and calypso music with a local flavour in the 1960s, passed away on Thursday evening. He was 70 and had been ailing for the past year. Noel was the leader of the La Ceylonians best known favourites like ‘Tharuna jeevitha apa vinodaya yen and ‘Hoiya hoiya among many other popular songs.
