Election monitor People's Action For Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has called for action against the attendance of Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) President Anuruddha Padeniya at a political rally.
Padeniya was spotted on camera while attending the launch of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's manifesto last week.
PAFFREL said that while there is no obstruction for an association to hand over proposals to presidential candidates, however, attending a political event of significance is a "direct involvement in politics".
"As a state medical officer he (Padeniya) cannot engage in any other political activity except for casting his vote," PAFFREL said in a letter to the Election Commission.
The election monitor pointed out that other associations too which should remain independent, could be drawn towards politics, as a result of this incident.
Accordingly, PAFFREL requested the EC to address this situation and take appropriate action.
