A local election monitoring group has requested Facebook Inc. to stop displaying paid political advertisements on its social media platform during the 'Silent Period' for the presidential election.
Election monitor People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said that this request had been made to stop promoting presidential candidates, and the spread of hate speech during this period.
PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi explained that political advertisements on social media platforms affect the independent decisions of the people on the choice of their candidate.
The 'Silent Period' will come into effect from midnight today (Nov 13) until 7 am on Saturday - the day of the election, during which campaigning activities of all presidential candidates will come to an end.
