Parliament today (11) unanimously approved the Bill on Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports without amendments.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya convened a special sitting of Parliament today on a request by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to debate the bill.
The bill aims to prevent offenses including match fixing, sports related corruption, illegal manipulation and illegal betting in sports.
In a tweet posted earlier today before the bill was passed, Sports Minister Harin Fernando thanked the Speaker for convening a special session of Parliament to finalize the bill. He claimed a group had tried to sabotage the passage of the bill to “save a betting king” but insisted “we will not back down.”
Meanwhile, Parliament also passed the National Innovation Agency Bill today with amendments.
Parliament will sit next in December after the conclusion of the upcoming Presidential Election.
