Parliament sittings came to an abrupt end today amidst demands by MPs of the Joint Opposition group that they be given more time to speak on an adjournment debate on the UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka.
Sittings ended just 55 minutes after they began with an irate Speaker Karu Jayasuirya announcing he was ending sittings due to continued disturbances by the JO MPs.
MP Dinesh Gunawardena who heads the JO group lead the opposition to the lack of time allocated to them saying it was unfair to allocate only 31 minutes to the 52 MPs in the group of 210 minutes for the entire debate.
MP Gunawardena said the JO had submitted this motion for the debate on Geneva resolution a month ago and then it was decided to allocate a full day for the debate.
However, after several heated arguments between UNP MPs and after several warnings, the Speaker ended the day’s proceedings.
Parliament will meet again tomorrow.
