Peradeniya Campus to reopen after New Year

News

All students of the University of Peradeniya left the campus premises by noon today after authorities temporarily suspended all academic programmes due to the spread of a viral influenza.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya Professor Upul Dissanayake told Times Online that there were some 500 students who were infected by the virus yesterday alone.

He said that in the early weeks of last month there were 60 cases reported per day. This number gradually increased up to 250 cases per day.

He said that there were almost 3000 students infected by the virus and the university had instructed the students to leave the premises.

Professor Dissanayake stated that they are hoping to reopen the university after the new year vacation.
