PM briefs diplomats ; world leaders condole and offer assistance to Sri Lanka

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has conducted a special briefing with all diplomats based in Colombo at Temple Trees this afternoon.

The meeting was held to brief diplomats on the current situation of the country in the wake of terror attacks which were reported across the country yesterday. Foreign Minister Thilak Marapana had also attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, several leaders including US President Donald Trump and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had expressed their condolences over yesterday's tragic incidents to the Prime Minister.

US President Trump, in a telephone conversation with Premier Wickremesinghe had said that the US was ready to provide any assistance required by Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the attacks.

Mr. Trump had also told the Prime Minister that the US would render its assistance towards eliminating international terrorist groups from the country.

In response, Mr. Wickremesinghe, on behalf of the Sri Lankan people had thanked the US President for offering his support as a friend of Sri Lanka.

US State Secretary Mike Pompeo had also expressed his condolences to the Prime Minister, a spokesman for the Prime Minister's office said adding that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe had also penned an email to Mr. Wickremesinghe expressing similar sentiments.

In addition, Maldivian Foreign Affairs State Minister Ahmed Kaleel called on Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees today. State Minister Kaleel had visited the Prime Minister as a special representative of Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

During today's discussions, Mr. Kaleel had said that Maldives was prepared to provide any assistance required by Sri Lanka. He had also expressed his condolences over the tragedy on behalf of the Maldivian President and the people.

Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Omar Abdul Razzak was also present during the meeting.
