Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has condemned the recent remarks made by former Eastern Governor M L A M Hizbullah regarding the Muslim community very recently.
Mr. Hizbullah had stated that the Muslim community must not succumb to pressure by being a minority in the country, since the Islamic faith is widely practiced on a global scale.
Addressing a meeting with civic groups today (Jun 11), the Prime Minister emphasised that extremist remarks must be stopped immediately since such statements could have detrimental consequences.
The Batticaloa Campus known to be the brainchild of the former Eastern Governor too would be accquired by the government, Mr. Wickremesinghe said during the meeting.
During the discussion, the Prime Minister noted that the ministerial cabinet had sought to bar the media from covering sittings while intelligence officers were giving evidence before the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) probing the Easter Sunday attacks.
However, he added that the cabinet does not have power to intervene into the matters of the PSC since it was appointed and approved by the Parliament and the independence of the legislature must therefore be ensured.
The Prime Minister had further noted that instructions have been issued to release the innocent Muslims who do not have links to extremist activities from remand custody.
Ven. Dambara Amila Thera, Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne, Saman Rathnapriya, Dr. P. Saravanamuttu, Dr. Jehan Perera, and Prof. Chandraguptha Thenuwara were among those who attended the meeting.
