Prime Minister's Secretary Saman Ekanayake has been asked to appear before a Presidential Commission on corruption today (Sept 6), to give evidence over a case concerning the Agriculture Ministry's building.
A complaint has been filed at the Commission citing the exhorbitant monthly rent of Rs 21.5 million paid by the Ministry of Agriculture for its current building in Rajagiriya owned by D.P.A Jayasinghe Company.
The Agriculture Ministry had rented out this building after vacating its previous one in Battaramulla as the government had decided to use it for the activities of Parliament Sectoral Oversight Committees.
Providing a five-hour statement before the Commission recently, Mr. Ekanayake said that the inefficiency of Agriculture Ministry officials had led to the payment of this massive rent even when they had not occupied the building for a year.
The Presidential Commission which is probing state sector corruption between 2015 and 2018 is investigating the complaint.
