A three-wheel driver was taken into custody over charges of serving as a spy in the theft of a diamond worth Rs 5 billion and gems worth Rs 20 million in Pannipitiya.
The suspect was arrested by the Peheliyagoda Police Organised Crimes Preventive Division in Moratuwa yesterday (Mar 10).
The name of the suspect had surfaced during questioning carried out on Kalum Sampath Indika alias 'Kaluma' who was arrested over the possession of the stolen diamond.
It has been revealed that the three-wheel driver was a close associate of 'Kaluma' and had lended his vehicle to carry out the theft.
Seven suspects have been arrested so far in connection with the theft.
