News

A police sergeant who was found guilty over a bribery case has been sentenced to 16 years of imprisonment to run concurrently in four years by the Colombo High Court today (Jul 23).

The sergeant who had been serving at the Kahawatte police station was found guilty of obtaining a bribe of Rs 15,000 in order to prevent legal action being taken against an individual over an illicit liquor related offence.

The Bribery Commission had filed charges under four counts against the suspect for committing the offence on February 4, 2009.

High Court judge Pradeep Hettiarachchi today announced that all charges against the suspect had been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. A fine of Rs 20,000 was also imposed on the suspect.

Meanwhile, the judge also ordered that the suspect would be sentenced to an additional five year term if he fails to pay the bribe amount as a penalty.
