A new administrative unit is to be set-up in order to handle matters pertaining to the Colombo Port City, Minister Patali Champika Ranwaka said Saturday.
“The port city will operate as a free trade zone. It will not fall under the purview of the Colombo Municipal Council,” the Megapolis and Western Development Minister said during a meeting with local government representatives at Devon Hotel in Kandy.
He also noted that an international hospital, school, conference hall, a park and a Yacht Marina will be set up on flour plots of land in this area by 2024. The port city land has been divided into 74 plots, he pointed out.
Minister Ranawaka also said that the necessary laws pertaining to the Port City will be prepared by Parliament in May.
Further, he added that measures would be taken to gazette this land as a part of Sri Lanka and establish it under the Urban Development Authority (UDA).
