President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday (Sept 10) claimed that the enviornment is being destroyed locally and globally by racketeers and those who have political power.
Addressing the Asia-Pacific conference of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation in Thulhuriya, the President pointed out that it is a timely need to create a balance between humans and nature to establish a sustainable society.
He further said that endemic and rare species of fauna and flora must be protected by taking steps to increase forest cover and by protecting enviornment sensitive areas.
While observing that a broad dialogue has been created in the tropical regions on bio-diversity, the President added that it is an honour for Sri Lanka to host the Asia-Pacific Conference.
Mr. Sirisena said he hopes that matters concerning the wild elephant issue which has resulted in the destruction of several crops, would be discussed at the conference.
The Conference which began yesterday will end on September 13.
