President Maithripala congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her recent unprecedented re-election for a fourth term.

Issuing a congratulatory message to Chancellor Merkel, President Sirisena noted that her electoral victory is a tribute to her able leadership and testimony to the trust and confidence reposed in her stewardship by the people of Federal Republic of Germany.
"Sri Lanka and Germany enjoy close and friendly bilateral relations, characterized by cooperation and the sharing of common democratic values and interests on a wide range of global issues. I look forward to working in partnership with the Federal Republic of Germany to further enhance this relationship for the benefit of the peoples of our two countries," the message read.
