President directs army to protect CEB instalations

President Maithripala Sirisena has ordered for the army to be deployed to protect all Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) instalations connected to the National Grid.

The move comes after yesterday's island-wide power outage. Some areas were reportedly without power for close to 10 hours after the island-wide blackout occurred at about 2.30pm. It was the second major power failure in less than a month, following a 3-hour disruption late February.

The CEB has identified that the cause of the blackout was most likely a technical fault that occurred at the sub-station in Biyagama. However, why the fault occurred is yet to be determined.
