President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday granted Rs. 1 million to the Police Sergeant Sanath Gunawardena who was suspended following an incident that took place in Thebuwana.
The sum was granted to the Sergeant and his family when the officer met with the President at the Presidential Secretariat.
The President’s Media Division said the President decided to make the donation in consideration of the financial difficulties faced by him due to the temporarily suspension of his service, and the assistance he needed for the education of his children.
The Police Sergeant was recently suspended following his ‘unruly behaviour’ over the release of a lorry allegedly transporting sand illegally which was seized by him was later released by the OIC of the Thebuwana Police T. Arulananthan.
