President invites private investments in power & energy sector

President Maithripala Sirisena requested private sector investors to join with the Government’s initiatives in making Sri Lanka an energy self-sufficient nation in the next ten years while fulfilling the energy requirement of the country.

This invitation was extended by the President during a special discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday regarding the new investments on power and energy.

He also gave instructions to the officials to continuously conduct the wind power projects and pointed out the possibility of getting assistance from the private sector. Sri Lanka is expected to generate electricity from solar power in the future and during the meeting it was discussed in detail.

A proposal was presented for expansion of the existing electrical system of the Victoria power station and the President instructed the officials to submit a report to him in this regard for further examination.

The Representatives of Ceylon Electricity Board, BOI and Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, including Minister of Power and Renewable Energy, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Minister Malik Samarawickrama, Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy Dr. Suren Batagoda and private sector investors participated in the meeting.
