President Maithripala Sirisena issued a gazette notification this week clarifying the confusion which prevailed over the ban on face covering garments.
The extra-ordinary gazette categorically states that the term “full face” means “a person’s face from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin and between (but not including) the ears”.
The new gazette had been issued in order to amend the previous gazette which stated that “full face” means the whole face of a person including the ears.
Accordingly, a person should refrain from wearing “clothing, garment, or other material” which conceals and hinders the identification of one self.
The Tri-Forces, police, or a member of the Department of Civil Security, therefore, may require a person to remove such garment, clothing, or material which conceals the identity of a person, the gazette read.
