PM visits Kuliyapitiya; says Cabinet to decide on granting relief to riot victims

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today (May 14) said that the cabinet of ministers will take steps to decide on providing compensation to those who were affected during yesterday's violent incidents across the country.

Speaking to the press after touring Kuliyapitiya where violence erupted yesterday, the Prime Minister said that the Police and the Tri-Forces have been given powers to protect the peace and security of the country.

He emphasised that unruly groups in the country must not be allowed to disrupt the forthcoming Vesak Festival celebrations.

"We have deployed police security to necessary places in order to ensure that the Vesak festival is celebrated without any interruptions," the Prime Minister said while calling on the public to support the police, and the tri-forces in their ongoing operations.

Mr. Wickremesinghe also pointed out that a special cabinet meeting was convened yesterday with the presence of the tri-forces Commanders and the IGP to vest more powers with the security forces.

During his visit to Kuliyapitiya, the Prime Minister visited the Hettipola mosque which was attacked by a mob yesterday.

A special discussion chaired by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe was also held at the Kuliyapitiya Police Superintendent's office with the attendance of Buddhist priests, politicians, security personnel and public representatives.
