President's former chief of staff, ex-STC chairman to be charged at High Court

The Bribery Commission today (Jun 11) said that it would move the High Court against the President's former chief-of-staff and the former State Timber Corporation (STC) Chairman over a bribery case.

Former chief-of staff Kusumdasa Mahanama, and ex-STC Chairman P. Dissanayake have been accused of obtaining a bribe to assist a businessman in accquiring some machinery and buildings of the Kantale Sugar factory.

They had demanded a bribe of Rs 540 million initially before agreeing to bring down the value to Rs 100 million. Officials of the Bribery Commission had arrested the suspects while they were accepting Rs 20 million of the bribe at a hotel in Colombo.

At present the case is being heard before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court. During a hearing today, the Bribery Commission told Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that it has concluded initial investigations on the case.

Accordingly, court announced that the case would be taken up for further hearing on September 10.
