The usage of social media must be monitored closely in the light of the the recent incidents which affected the country's national security, Minister Kabir Hashim proposed today (May 25).
The Minister had made this remark during a special review meeting which was chaired by the President to review the progress of security measures which are being implemented in the country.
During the discussion, the governors opined that Civil Security Committee must be strengthened and established instead of setting up community police units. This would assist greatly in ensuring the country's security, they said.
In response to these suggestions, President Maithripala Sirisena said that he will put forward these ideas to the National Security Council in order to arrive at a final decision prior to its implementation.
Meanwhile, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had pointed out that certain foreign envoys whom he had met with recently had expressed satisfaction over the country's security. He noted that the diplomats had ensured that they will take steps to ease travel restrictions imposed on tourists travelling to Sri Lanka.
The progress review meeting was attended by political leaders across all fronts, university chancellors, and high ranking individuals in the defence apparatus of the country.
President Sirisena had said that he hopes to convene a meeting every month to provide an opportunity to express the shortcomings and diffculties on the measures which are being taken to tighten national security.
