Government experts are examining options of proroguing parliament as a way out of the impasse over the appointment of a new Central Bank Governor, informed sources said on Friday.
This is because both President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe are undecided over the choice of the new appointee. The PM is pushing for the return of Arjuna Mahendran, whose term ended on Thursday, if and when he is cleared by the COPE probe over tainted Treasury bonds and former Treasury Secretary Charitha Ratwatte as a stopgap appointment while the President is keen to appoint Deputy Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe.
The sources said that in this scenario it is likely that the only way out is proroguing parliament. Such a move would affect the COPE case. - ENDS -
