Railway trade unions have decided to engage in an indefinite strike action starting from midnight tonight citing several demands including long-standing salary anomalies.
Unions claim that the government has not yet implemented a previous cabinet proposal to resolve salary issues of railway employees.
They also alleged that the Railways Department has been collecting fines from train crews involved in speeding collisions, to repair damages caused to the train.
Railway employees engaged in a work-to-rule campaign since last week warning that they would resort to a strike if their demands are not met.
