Ranil Wickremesinghe, speaking at a press briefing organised by the United National Party said he hopes to get this "controversy out of the way".
Mr. Wickremesinghe pointed out that an individual with the majority can become the Prime Minister, as per the constitution.
He also requested an emergency parliamentary session to prove his majority in the parliament.
He further added that it is the Parliament which should decide on this matter.
